What Tampa Patients Can Expect After Rhinoplasty By Jaime Perez on August 14, 2014

Rhinoplasty Tampa

If you decide that now is the time to take charge of your appearance by considering plastic surgery, then consider the results of a unique rhinoplasty surgery. When it comes to the rhinoplasty Tampa procedure, there is no better way to reshape your nose and your life with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon. Facial plastic surgery is a complex process and in certain cases more than one feature is corrected to offer ideal refinement. One of the things that patients contemplate is the after effects of rhinoplasty. Well the first thing every patient should know is that every cosmetic surgery includes a recovery period. To help you understand the importance of postoperative recovery, we will share some of the specifics about what to do after a nose job.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Over the next 7 to 10 days you may be instructed to rest in the comfort of your home until your doctor allows you to return to work and normal activities. As any other plastic surgery, there will be some bruising and swelling that will diminish over the next few days. Using cold compresses is best to reduce the soreness and swelling in the surrounding areas of your nose. However, never directly place them on the nose as it will be too sensitive to hold any weight.

Rest and Elevation

Every plastic surgeon will provide their own set of specific instructions on how long to keep your head elevated after rhinoplasty. Sleeping on your back is mandatory to avoid placing pressure or causing accidental trauma to the nose.

Physical Activities

You know your body better than anyone and you may be one of the lucky ones who know how to block the distractions of pain and feel strong enough to return to strenuous activities, but this is not recommended for anyone after surgery. Your new nose requires a minimum of six weeks to allow the nasal tissue and bones to adapt, which means no heavy lifting; strenuous exercise or intense physical activities are allowed until your doctor agrees that you can return to full range of physical activities. For now, in order to keep steady blood circulation, short walks are allowed starting the next day after surgery. During the walk remember to take things slow so that your heart rate does not flare up too high.

Congestion

Due to swelling, silicone splints and usual allergies your nasal structure may temporarily feel obstructed. However, your nostrils will not be completely blocked from nasal splints or cartilage, but it is still possible to feel congested. In these instances, you are not recommended to blow your nose or sniff to allow the nasal tissue to heal. Instead, your plastic surgeon can recommend an over-the-counter medicine or prescription decongestant to decrease your symptoms.

How Patients Feel After Rhinoplasty

According to a survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, one of the top five things patients are concerned with is the recovery process. Recovery times are increasingly reduced and results are more subtle to retain a natural outcome. After the nose has been reshaped, patients may wake up feeling nauseous as blood from surgery can drain internally. Prescribed medication may be utilized to ensure that this wears off during recovery. Generally, patients feel groggy from the anesthesia, but this wears off within an hour after waking up. Patients can rest until their vitals stabilize and then be driven home by a friend or relative.
