A Liposuction Patient's Testimonial About Our Quality of Care in Tampa

"I am 6 weeks out on having a tummy tuck with liposuction and the whole experience with Dr. Perez and his staff has been amazing... After two babies, two C-sections, and a stomach that was so stretched out with a huge amount of skin left over I never thought I would have a body like the one Dr. Perez created for me. I look better than I did weighing 120 in high school and I know it is only going to get better as I continue healing. I feel so much more confident in myself knowing I can finally wear clothes without having to worry about hiding my extra skin." Candace G.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Because liposuction is a body contouring technique and not a weight loss method, the best candidates for lipo are people who are close to their ideal body weight, have good skin elasticity, and have specific areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Want to finalize your weight loss results
  • Want to remove weight after pregnancy
  • Want a more curvy or chiseled appearance

How Tumescent Liposuction Works

You will first have to visit our plastic surgery office in Tampa, FL, serving the entire Tampa Bay area, for a consultation with Dr. Perez. This consultation will allow you to discuss your goals and determine your candidacy for treatment.

Your liposuction procedure will involve several steps:

Our goal at the Plastic Surgery Center of Tampa is to provide each patient a compassionate, professional, and safe environment where they can feel comfortable discussing and learning about their desired procedures. Dr. Jaime Perez

Anesthesia

While some forms of liposuction may require general anesthesia to ensure your comfort for the duration of the procedure, we may be able to perform tumescent liposuction, which only requires local anesthesia and a vasoconstrictor to minimize discomfort and bleeding. This anesthesia will allow you to return to your regular routine faster, but it can't be used in every liposuction case.

Incisions

Dr. Perez will then make small incisions near the treatment site so a thin instrument called a cannula can access the fat deposits.

Fat Removal

The unwanted fat is suctioned away as Dr. Perez sculpts your new silhouette.

Compression Garments

Once your desired shape has been achieved, the small incisions are closed, and you will be placed in special compression garments to encourage healing.
Depending on the treatment site, the entire procedure usually lasts about one to two hours. You may be able to go home the same day as your procedure but will likely have to make arrangements for someone to drive you in case you're drowsy from the anesthesia.

We Offer Different Liposuction Techniques

Before the fat deposits can be removed, they must be broken down. There are several methods Dr. Perez can use to do this, aside from using a tumescent solution.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

Possibly the best lipo option, this form of liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to loosen fat cells. This method is gentler than other options, uses no heat, results in less scarring and tissue damage, and can have a faster recovery time. This is the type of liposuction Dr. Perez uses the most.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses a cannula or probe to deliver fat-liquefying ultrasonic waves under the skin. This technique is primarily used to remove fat from thick, fibrous areas on the body that can be difficult to treat. These areas include the back or flanks, male breasts (i.e., gynecomastia), knees, and ankles.

SmartLipo Procedure

Laser Liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo) uses a cannula with an attached laser to liquefy fat cells with heat. Once liquefied, the fat is then removed through traditional liposuction incisions using standard liposuction cannulas. This method may promote skin tightening and have a shorter recovery time than other methods.

Water Liposuction

Water-assisted liposuction (Body-Jet) uses a jet of water and/or a tumescent solution to loosen fat cells from the surrounding connective tissue. This method may result in less swelling and have a shorter recovery period. The excess fat cells removed during this form of liposuction can be used in fat grafting procedures.

High-Definition Liposuction

High-definition liposuction (4D lipo) is a technique that uses ultrasound energy to create a more sculpted, defined look. Fat can even be added to areas where more bulk or volume would be attractive. In men, this method is commonly used to add bulk to abdominal, oblique, deltoid, bicep, tricep, and latissimus muscles. In women, it can add volume to the breasts, buttocks, and hips.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Tampa will discuss your liposuction options with you during your consultation and come up with a treatment plan to help you achieve your body sculpting goals.

Recovering After the Procedure

Recovery times after liposuction vary, but patients are usually back to work in one to two weeks.

To make your recovery easier, take all antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed by your doctor and wear compression garments for about six weeks so your skin can heal properly.

How Much Fat Can I Remove?

/

In the state of Florida, no more than four liters (approximately eight pounds) of fat may be removed at one time in an outpatient setting. For large-volume liposuction (i.e., greater than five liters), the patient is hospitalized overnight so they can be monitored.
