If you are considering breast augmentation, there is a good chance that you have been unhappy with the appearance of your breasts for quite some time. The majority of breast augmentation patients seen by Tampa plastic surgeon Jaime Perez spend a significant amount of time thinking about enhancing their breasts through breast augmentation before their initial personal consultation. Many women find themselves wishing for bigger, perkier, and more symmetrical breasts. While there is an abundance of choices when it comes to bras today, once they are removed, any added size, lift, or change in shape that they provided disappears. The size, shape, and perkiness of a woman’s breasts can play a key role in how she feels about her physical appearance. Through breast augmentation with breast implants, you can achieve the feminine contours you desire.

Breast Augmentation Placement

For our patients in Tampa, breast augmentation placement is incredibly important. Should the breast implant be placed above or below the muscle? Are “overs” or “unders” better? The only way to truly determine which placement best suits your unique contours is by scheduling a personal consultation at our Tampa plastic surgery center. Your body frame, muscle tone, and breast tissue, among other factors, determine which placement is best suited to you. The two most common placements are subglandular and submuscular.

Breast Augmentation Placement: Subglandular

Subglandular implant placement places the breast implants under the breast tissue and above the chest or pectoral muscles. This placement is often referred to as “overs.” Breast implants placed using the subglandular method are typically easier to insert and manipulate. Because subglandular placement is a less complicated method of surgery, patients often experience an easier recovery period with less pain than with other types of breast augmentation placement methods.

This type of placement may be accomplished through periareolar incisions, armpit incisions, and inframammary fold incisions. Subglandular implant placement is often ideal for women who have athletic builds or who are body builders. Women who have breasts that are not close together or who want more “cleavage” may benefit more from subglandular implant placement. While there are many advantages to subglandular placement, there are some disadvantages as well. Subglandular placement may create a rounder look than that of natural breasts. Any rippling that may occur after placement may be more easily felt with subglandular placement than with submuscular placement. Women with subglandular placement may also be at a greater risk of developing capsular contracture.

Breast Augmentation Placement: Submuscular

Submuscular implant placement places the breast implants under the pectoral muscles. This placement is commonly referred to as “unders” and is often ideal for women who have small breasts. The risk of capsular contracture is not as high with submuscular placement. Visible rippling is also less likely to occur with submuscular placement than with subglandular placement. Submuscular placement may not be ideal for women who have breasts that sag. The recovery period with submuscular placement is often longer with greater discomfort.
