Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer Helps Achieve more Symmetrical Breasts

By Jaime Perez on November 12, 2015

Have you ever wondered how plastic surgeons are able to achieve an almost perfect symmetry of the breasts with a breast augmentation procedure? As you may well know, not all women are born with symmetric breasts. Therefore, inserting two implants of the same exact size will not solve the symmetry problem in its entirety.

To deal with this issue, plastic surgeons usually insert two implants of different sizes in order to make the breasts look more symmetrical. The one problem that results from doing this is that the breast with the bigger implant will sometimes look wider, due to the larger width of the implant.

That's where fat grafting to the breasts comes in. With this additional procedure, the plastic surgeon is able to insert two implants of the same size, which will keep the breasts' width equal (the ideal situation). Then, by performing liposuction on other parts of the body, some of the patient's fat is collected and then transferred to the breast that still needs to be augmented, allowing a more natural sense of symmetry to be achieved in the patient's body. See sample pictures here.

Not all patients need or qualify for this particular plastic surgery since every case is different. The patient should always consult her plastic surgeon in order to find out if this would be a viable procedure for her.

An ideal candidate for this procedure is:

  • Any woman who is in good health condition

  • A woman with enough body fat in other parts of the body

  • A woman that has undergone silicone or saline breast augmentation

  • A woman with realistic expectations about the procedure
