Breast augmentation is an exciting way to achieve your ideal curves, but when it comes to customizing your new breast size and shape, it can be overwhelming. The best way to choose the perfect implant size for you is at an in-person consultation with an experienced breast surgeon. That said, knowing some facts about breast implant sizing will help you step into your consultation with confidence. By the end of this guide, you’ll better understand breast implant dimensions and how they relate to cup size.

How Do We Measure Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation is one of the most customizable cosmetic procedures. The breast implants themselves are measured by three dimensions—volume, diameter, and profile—all of which affect the final outcome, including size and shape.

Implant Volume

We tend to think of breast size in terms of cup size. For implants, volume is the unit of measurement that describes implant size. Implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cc), indicating how much space the implant will occupy. Implants can range from 100 cc to 1000 cc, though the most common size is 300–400 cc.

Implant Diameter

Diameter is the width of the base, or flat bottom, of the implant. It’s measured across the widest part of the bottom of the implant. For round implants, the diameter is straightforward, while for teardrop implants, the diameter is the length across the widest section of the base.

Implant diameter affects the outline of your breast. Often, the best fit will closely match the base width of your natural breasts. Implants that are too wide can protrude under the arm and look unnatural, while implants that are too narrow can create a wider cleavage than most patients prefer.

Implant Profile

The implant profile is how far the implant projects from your chest. “Profile” and “projection” both refer to the same thing. Your main profile options are:

  • Low Profile: These implants have the least projection and provide a more natural look.
  • Moderate Profile: These offer a middle ground, creating noticeably larger breasts while maintaining a more natural result.
  • High Profile: These implants project significantly from the chest, and are ideal for women who want dramatic results and fuller cleavage.

What Is the Most Popular Breast Implant Size?

While the most common implant volume typically lies between 300 and 400 cc, the best option for you will depend on your aesthetic goals and your current breast shape, size, and existing breast tissue.

If you’re looking for a significant size increase, you’ll want to choose a higher implant volume or a high-profile implant. If you want a more natural look, you’ll likely want a moderate or low-profile implant, or one with less volume.

How Does Implant Size Affect Cup Size?

An important thing to note about cup sizes is that each bra manufacturer has its own sizing system. This is why you can be different sizes across different bra brands. Cup size is a ratio of band width (the size of your ribcage) divided by the fullest part of the bust. In contrast, breast implant volume is universal.

Still, it can be helpful to think about implant size in terms of cup size, since that’s the measurement most of us are familiar with when it comes to breast size.

As a general rule of thumb, the breasts will increase by roughly one cup size with every 150 to 200 cc of implant volume. The following chart shows roughly how much implant volume is necessary for the desired cup size increase:

  • A cup to B cup: 150–200 cc implant volume
  • From A cup to C cup: 300–350 cc
  • From A cup to D cup: 370–450 cc
  • From B cup to C cup: 250–350 cc
  • From B cup to D cup: 350–400cc

This is not exact math, though. Your final cup size will depend on your unique implants, plus your starting chest size and natural breast tissue. If you have a specific cup size in mind, tell your surgeon at your consultation. Bring photos and be ready to describe the aesthetic you desire for your breasts—an experienced surgeon like Dr. Jaime Perez can help you pick out the perfect implants for your goals.
