Breast augmentation helps thousands of women achieve their dream curves and increased confidence every year. Naturally, many patients who are considering breast augmentation wonder how long this surgery will last. This blog will discuss the lifespan of breast implants, signs your implants need to be replaced, and tips for maintaining your results so you can enjoy them for as long as possible.

Do Breast Implants Expire?

Breast implants technically don’t feature expiration dates. These devices are made of high-quality silicone, and new advancements in implant technology are happening in the industry all the time. That said, they are not intended to last a lifetime.

What Is the Average Lifespan of Breast Implants?

Both saline and silicone breast implants tend to last for about 10 to 15 years. Many patients have their implants removed or replaced after about 10 years.

However, as long as your implants aren’t presenting complications, and you still like their aesthetic and feel they fit your lifestyle, you can keep the implants in for as long as you’d like. Many women have had their implants for 20 years or longer without incident.

When Should I Replace My Breast Implants?

There are two instances when women typically replace their breast implants: in the event of implant complications, and when they wish to change implant size or style.

Some examples of complications include:

  • Implant hardening: If your implants suddenly feel tight, or if your breasts feel unusually hard or appear overly round, you may be experiencing capsular contracture. This common breast implant complication occurs when the capsule, or scar tissue surrounding the implant, begins thickening or tightening. When this happens, breast explantation or revision surgery can help relieve symptoms and improve the breast appearance.
  • Rupture: When saline implants rupture, they instantly shrink. Silicone implant ruptures can be harder to detect and usually require MRI imaging to confirm. In either case, breast revision can replace the damaged implant and refresh your breast aesthetic.
  • Position change: Sometimes implants shift. This is called malposition and can manifest in numerous ways, such as bottoming out, shifting out of the implant pocket, showing visible rippling, and fusing together in a phenomenon called symmastia. Again, breast revision surgery can correct implant malposition, but usually requires a highly experienced surgeon to properly correct the issue.

Aside from complications, sometimes women just want an implant upgrade. A change in lifestyle may necessitate bigger or smaller implants, or a woman may simply want an aesthetic change.

How to Maintain Your Breast Implant Results

If you want the results of your breast augmentation to be long lasting, there are a few steps you can take to positively influence the longevity of your implants:

  • Choose a skilled surgeon. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation is one of the best ways to assure your safety and satisfaction. A good surgeon will also ensure your selected implants fit your lifestyle and your frame for the best results.
  • Follow all postoperative instructions carefully. This way, you can prevent complications and ensure the smoothest recovery, so you’ll be enjoying your beautiful results in no time.
  • Get regular imaging. In the case of silicone or gummy bear implants, you’ll want to get regular imaging and maintain all follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor the health and proper function of your breast implants.
