What Is Breast Implant Explantation?

Breast explantation, also called breast explant surgery or breast implant removal, is the surgical removal of breast implants.

Sometimes, patients pursue explantation surgery due to breast implant complications, while others choose to have breast implants removed for personal reasons.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Implant Explantation?

How Is Breast Implant Explantation Performed?

Breast implant explantation is an outpatient procedure that is usually performed under general anesthesia. The technique chosen will depend on the patient’s needs and goals. During your consultation, you and Dr. Perez will discuss the best method for your needs.

Implant Removal Only

Patients who do not wish to replace their breast implants can choose to have the implants removed without further procedures. There are many techniques used for removing breast implants:

  • A simple implant removal leaves the capsule (scar tissue) in place. This method is the most straightforward and involves minimal injury to surrounding tissues.
  • A capsulectomy removes the breast implant plus the entire surrounding capsule. This is often used in the case of complications like capsular contracture, breast implant rupture, or breast implant illness (BII) and usually provides instant relief.
  • En bloc capsulectomy removes the implant and capsule in one piece.

Implant Removal and Replacement

Some patients wish to replace their old implants and upgrade to a different size, shape, or material. After old implants are removed, new implants can be placed during the same surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Perez will help you decide what type of implant you’d like to replace your old ones with.

Explantation with Mastopexy

Many patients do not want new implants inserted but are still concerned about how their breasts will look after removing their old implants. An excellent solution is to combine breast implant removal with a breast lift (mastopexy). This provides the comfort and relief of breast implant explantation, as well as reshaping the breasts for a youthful, lifted look.

What Is Breast Implant Explantation Recovery Like?

After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in surgical dressings and, if necessary, a surgical bra or compression garment to minimize swelling. Dr. Perez and his team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions.

The recovery process will be similar to your primary breast augmentation. You will need to get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, bending over, or lifting your arms. Light walking is encouraged during recovery to promote blood flow and prevent blood clots. Usually, patients can return to work about one week after surgery.

When Will I See My Breast Implant Explantation Results?

If you were experiencing implant complications like capsular contracture, rupture, or breast implant illness, you will experience immediate relief after your explantation surgery. Many patients enjoy improved physical comfort, emotional relief, and peace of mind after having breast implants removed.

You will continue to see better results as your breasts heal. Some patients experience a “fluffing” period, where the breast tissue stabilizes and softens. If you had a breast lift, you will see full results a few weeks after surgery. After incisions heal, scars will fade over the next year or two.

How Much Does Breast Implant Explantation Cost?

The cost of breast implant removal depends on a variety of factors, including surgeon fees, anesthesia fees, and whether you combine your surgery with other procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Perez will provide you with accurate pricing details.
